How do you like them apples?
December 1, 2017
Norton has a funny way of spending his free time. He is quite proud of the things he learns. And he kind of alludes to this being some form of big secret in the produce business in order to keep people buying more apples. Perhaps a cover up by “Big Apple” to increase sales? Norton has some pretty zany ideas.
Regardless of Norton’s theories about why this is not widespread knowledge, if you are wondering whether eating an apple with virtually no waste is true, give it a try sometime. Eating from the top down (or bottom up) right through the core allows you to have a combination of a large portion of fruit and a small portion of core with each bite. With the ratio of fruit to small bit of slightly rougher core, you really don’t notice much of the core portion at all until you hit the seeds. At that point tap the seeds out into the garbage or into your compost and keep on eating. The result is virtually no waste. The more you know!
I’ve tried it a few times myself and was amazed at the results. I don’t do it all the time. But after having tried it I figured it was something that Norton would really get excited about and want to share with others. I just had to find a way to turn it into a gag. In this case the gag is that Wilfrid doesn’t care but Norton is going to tell him anyway. And in the last panel Wilfrid tries to subtly hint that it was a waste of his time, and I don’t think that Norton fully gets that.
And after you’ve read through the comic strip and all of this the irony is not lost on me either.
